| Advice for your engagement in China. |
Engagement ,also called affiance, is a necessary process for marriage in many countries, but it's not true in China. In China , engagement is determined on both parties’ own will, and Chinese law doesn't interfere in it. Even you have engaged, you are not legally husband and wife ,so neither has to bear the rights and obligations for husband and wife. So engagement is not equal to marriage.
According to Chinese folk habitude, the boy's parents always give the girl some money for her first visit to them, which is called "hongbao" in Chinese and when they plan to marry , engagement ring is absolutely necessary and the boy’s parents will give the girl another sum of money. Gifts to your girlfriend while her first visit to your parents will make her feel well-beloved. You have right to take back your "hongbao" after your engagement but fail to get the marriage certificate. |
