With the rapid speed of China’s opening up to the outside world and more and more frequent foreign exchanges, marriage of a Chinese to a foreigner is not rare at all, especially in big cities like Shanghai and Beijing. Take Shanghai as an example, an important metropolis in the Far East, the number of foreign nationals living in Shanghai is constantly increasing. Based on the figure issued by Shanghai Labor and Security Bureau in 2002, the number of foreign nationals living in Shanghai has reached 19239, if including those who stay on business or for other reasons, the number has exceeded more than ten thousand. At present, from the number of foreigners working in Shanghai, people from Japan, U.S.A., Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, Australia, France, Canada and U.K take up the first ten; from the rates of employment, Japanese amounts for 33.3%; Americans for 11.7%; Koreans for 8.8% and Singapore for 8.1% respectively. With the increase of foreigners working in Shanghai and more and more frequent exchanges, marriage of a Chinese to a foreigner in Shanghai has a trend to step up. At present, there are nearly 3 pairs of couples that get married of a Chinese to a foreigner in every 100 newly-wed couples, ranking first in China. Statistics show that during 7 years from 1996 to 2002, registration for marriage of a Chinese to a foreigner has exceeded more than 21,000 pairs, 3000 pairs per year on average. This figure outnumbers by over 7-fold since 1980 and nearly ten pairs get marriage certificate every day at the matrimonial registry concerning marriage of a Chinese to a foreigner in Shanghai.
